1. You need to cut back the shingles at least 2-3 inches on each side. Box cutters or a knife can be used for this.
2. Next go to a roofing supply store and purchase a metal valley. This can be either galvanized (silver color) or painted to match the shingles.
3. Lift the shingles up and slide the valley under it, then fasten the valley with nails that are under the shingles.
4. Depending on the type of shingle you may need to use an adhesive under them to hold them down at the edge where it meets the valley.
Really, the only solution to insure proper drainage is to remove shingles back to allow a minimum of 24" wide flashing material to be laid into the valley.
If you stack your shingles in 2 piles, you should be able to put them back in the same order, without needing any new ones.
